Even well beyond the pressures of the winter, hospitals in England are having to deploy escalation measures to cope with levels of demand. According to the British Medical Association, 9 in 10 NHS trusts were still using escalation beds with little sign of this practice ending. This research shows that hospitals' 'core bed stock' is no longer able to deal with the level of year-round demand on the NHS.

Our virtual roundtable explores the importance of step down services to alleviate NHS pressures by creating safe environments to discharge patients into; reducing delays, creating community capacity and improving patients’ experiences.

Richard Parker
Board Member, North Norfolk Primary Care

Richard has extensive board-level experience in Healthcare Operations Management and has worked as both Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director in a number of Acute NHS Hospitals. Richard now runs a Healthcare Advisory and Consulting business which has previously supported a number of NHS organisations and systems to reform their approach and management of patient discharge. Most recently Richard has been supporting a large Primary Care provider in establishing a designated COVID-19 setting in the Norfolk system.

Thomas Dowle
Divisional Chief Nurse, Community Division – Acacium Group

As the Divisional Chief Nurse for the community division at Acacium Group, Thomas has responsibility for the quality and safety of care delivery for clients in Thornbury Community Services and Pulse Nursing at Home. Thomas has worked for Acacium Group since February 2021. Previous to this he was the Head of Nursing for a community division and Service Lead for unplanned care which included: rapid response, discharge to assess, care home assessment team and 52 intermediate care beds. Thomas has been part of the COVID-19 transformation and implementation of national discharge policy. He has worked in the community as a senior clinician for 4 years and has been part of the STP for urgent care in NCL developing pathways that allow patients to stay safely in the community and to be discharged quicker from acute and community beds. Thomas is passionate about ensuring the right care is available at the right time, in the right place, first time and every time.

 
Ian McIntosh
Business Development Director, Community Division – Acacium Group

Ian leads the internal teams within the community division at Acacium Group, who engage and work with key stakeholders to provide complex care solutions in the community. He has worked for both Pulse Nursing at Home and Thornbury Community Services for over 3 years in both business development and operational roles. Ian has personally been involved in the commissioning over 150 complex care packages. He is also a member of the Senior Management Team.

Jermaine Humphry
Business Manager, Pulse Nursing at Home

In his role as Business Manager for Pulse Nursing at Home, Jermaine is responsible for providing complex care solutions working with private markets and case management companies. He has recently been seconded to manage and coordinate the implementation of step down services, working with key stakeholders to provide workforce solutions. Previous to this he has worked as a senior coordinator to support clients entering into Residential, Community Care and Independent Living.
