Revalidation

As you will know, revalidation is the process that all nurses in the UK must follow to maintain their registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC). Required every three years, revalidation doesn’t need to be scary or stressful – in fact, it can be quite simple

At Pulse Nursing at Home we’re experienced in supporting our nurses in their revalidation, so we’ve put together this guide to help make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible!

What is revalidation?

Revalidation is the method by which you renew your register to the NMC – without completing revalidation you will lose your pin and not be able to practise nursing.

Revalidation was introduced in 2016 to ensure that best practice is being followed across the industry. The process ensures that you are developing and improving your skills to deliver the best possible care to the individuals you support. Revalidation was not designed to catch anyone out, rather it has been implemented to encourage an environment of sharing knowledge, increase personal development and help build public trust in the nursing industry.

What do you need to do?

An overview of what you will need for revalidation is provided below but please visit NMC website for full details of the revalidation process.

Over the three year period, you will need to provide a portfolio that can evidence:

  • 450 practice hours (900 if you are both a nurse and midwife)
  • 35 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Five pieces of practice-related feedback and five written reflective accounts
  • A reflection discussion
  • A health and character declaration
  • Your professional indemnity arrangement
  • The details of your confirmer

Your portfolio must be submitted on time and you must be registered with the NMC online. It is your responsibility to know when you are due to renew and to maintain and submit your portfolio. However, this doesn’t mean you’re alone.

How we can support you with revalidation

If Pulse Nursing at Home is your primary employer, then there are a range of ways we will support you through the process. Our friendly team can answer any questions you have and act as a guide to you throughout revalidation.

Pulse Nursing at Home will also undertake yearly appraisal meetings and offer supervision sessions to support your development. We can also provide you with information on events that will count towards your CPD hours and act as your confirmer, with a meeting arranged at least one month prior to your renewal date.

Revalidation doesn’t need to be hard, and with Pulse Nursing at Home it won’t be. We will be with you every step of the way to ensure you can continue providing the highest quality of compliant, compassionate care in the community.
